Just curious - I know Radio Paradise and others take donations. Radioio plays on the Squeezebox with no commercials, and seemingly high-quality sound. They have a premium service on their website, but I don't know what it gets you. I almost feel like I'm stealing, since I really like a couple of their streams and listen to them a lot.
I think it's a deal between Slimdevices and RadioIO that is offering us the higher quality streams. If you try to listen to them using Winamp or the like you will imho not have the same bitrate.
