As an alternative to the fwd/rew buttons, you may want to try the song
scanner plugin.

Thanks for the info, KDF, I've installed Songscanner and I'll try and
create this "custom map" thing you mentioned.
you can edit Default.map if you'd prefer. You will have to restart the server, and be aware that if you install a new version of slimserver then your changes to Default.map will need to be made again. Custom.map is left alone.
However, I still can't believe how impractical the ordinary rewind and
fast-forward functions are on the SB3.
yes, I read your posts.

At the very least, a listener
should be able to get the player to go back to "play" mode by pressing
the button that is the opposite of what they were doing - so if you
were rewinding, rather than having to cycle through a dozen different
speeds before you can get back to "play", you just hit "fast-forward"
once and the track starts playing.
as I have said, you do not have to do this. you just hit play to return. This is like a lot of dvd players. Though, I know this does have more levels. My particular dvd player skips 2x, 4x, 8, 16 and 32 and doesn't actually return to play. intuitive is a matter of perspective.

Is there any way this can be remedied in the next firmware update?
it has nothing to do with firmware, which is fortunate. the firmware is not open. the server software is, so all that is required is for someone to write a patch. As you my guess, everyone has their own priorities, and you'll find that most are far more willing to cheer for their pet peeve to be fixed, than to learn perl and fix it. You can always go to bugs.slimdevices.com, find the various reports on ffwd and rew, and vote for your favourite.
