That was in response to a major rewrite. That is a far cry from fixing things that crash the server. I'd certainly welcome patches, of course.

The only bit of info I can add to this gmail problem, is the gmail
notifier uses port 80 according to my firewall logging software, whilst
Thunderbird checking gmail checks on port 995.

I'm fairly certain that the POP3 module assumes the standard POP3 port. Ill have to check. It could be as simple as actually allowing the port to be specified. A simple change, I'll do.

I could try putting this alternate IP address into the pop3 checker,
but I'd assume that the IP address may change?

I would tend to think it would.
