Have you checked the brightness setting when off ? Sometimes this defaults to 0 (i.e. dark) which confuses people who think the SB is off.
Try hitting brightness a couple of times on the remote. If that does the job, go into player settings and change it to 1/2/3/4. I seem to recall when I used a 6.2.2 nightly a long while back that the brightness seemed to default to 0 even though I had it set at 2 in the player menu.
