There are quite a few "embedded" devices which run Linux now. Many/all of these NAS boxes do and at one time some routers did as well. The Linksys WRT54GL router still does - the "L" is for "Linux". :-) The Linux kernel can be very highly optimized and doesn't require nearly the resources Windows does - besides, for a device like this that's merely displaying a configuration web page and doing some underlying work, Windows isn't needed. Plus Windows would be prohibitively expensive to put in so many devices. The smallest device I've ever seen that can run Linux is the "gumstix" computer. It's a complete computer the size of a stick of gum. http://www.gumstix.com/ > > And this hacking into the thing (which I have come across) to actually > get it to do what you want, sounds a bit worring to me, as I generally > just turn the pc on and off.....my technical abilities with regards to > computers, generally leads to the thing not working I am afraid. Yes, it can be complex and intimidating and will surely void your warranty. In the U.S., Infrant supports SlimServer (nearly) right out of the box. In the U.K., Qnap supports SlimServer right out of the box. You'd best go with those. > A simple question,no doubt, to those who know, can you have a Linux NAS > with a microsoft based network ? No problem. Linux-based NASes run 'Samba' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_software), a software which is a Windows networking emulator. A Windows machine will think a Samba fileshare is an ordinary Microsoft Windows fileshare. -- Mark Lanctot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23553 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
