For me, the reason is I did A/B testing (double blind) and I couldn't hear the difference betweent the CD and Lame alt-preset-standard MP3. And if you read much at all on hydrogenaudio.com, you'll see that not many can. There are problem tracks that highlight the difficulties of MP3 encoding but most folks who say they can hear the difference are experiencing the placebo effect. And they spend hundreds of dollars on power cables. Placebo is a fun word, don't you think?
