I abandoned the stand alone server because i couldn't make it quiet
enough with what i wanted it to do.

I was originally going to install MythTV (an open source PVR
application) along with slimserver and have all my media stored on four
or five 400gig drives.

Unfortunitely this was going to be in a cupboard in my bedroom. I
though i would be able to silence it enough to not be a problem, but
that just wasn't going to happen. So i decided to ditch that idea until
i move to a bigger place and have a study/computer room to house things
like this.

I'm pretty happy with my Qnap TS-101. It isn't silent, you can hear the
drive spinning when the room is quiet, but it isn't enough to cause a
problem. Eventually it will end up in a cupboard somewhere anyway.
Performance isn't startling when you ask it to list the 830+ albums or
330+ artists, but thats understandable for a device like this. I don't
know how a K6 300 would compair. Possibly similar to be honest (the
Qnap is 400MHz, but not a powerful per mhz).
