Kevin thanks for throwing a spanner in :) the old Infrants are a bit pricy a!

I wouldn't call it cheap, no, but I didn't think it was unreasonable (obviously, since I bought one). The most cost-effective way to do it is to buy the empty box and put your own drives in it.

Oh, do you know if the XRAID thing can be turned off so its just storage?

You can configure it to use RAID levels 0, 1, 5, and X-RAID (which is a 5 that has automatic volume expansion). So the short answer is yes, but I prefer the redundancy of a RAID 5.

Sorry thinking more, can different sized hdd's be used?

Well, you can certainly put in multiple drives each of a particular size (e.g., 4 500G drives or 4 250G drives), but I'm not sure if you can mix sizes, say having one 200 G drive and another 400 G drive. I'm sure if you ask on the forums you'll get a definitive answer. One of the reasons I went with the Infrant product is the quality of the forums there (not that I'm knocking someone else's choice, I'm not looking for a "my NAS is better than your NAS" fight).
