OK, it looks as though my problem is more complicated that I thought. Even after regenerating the MusicIP cache with no archiving, I still ended up with the strange squares in my tags when viewed from Slimserver. If I disabled the MusicIP server and did a rescan, all the tags are fine, but as soon as I run MusicIP again, they reappear. The subtle thing is that only three albums are affected. The only distinguishing features of these files are (i) they are mp3 files and (ii) I used foobar2000 to add replaygain tags (not sure whether this is cosher for mp3, but slimserver seems fine with them). Mp3 files with no replaygain tags are fine, ogg and flac files with replaygain files are also fine. Strange!
