Cat 5 or wireless is a lot easier to deal with as a distribution method than running speaker wires everywhere. Multi-channel amps are expensive and it would be potentially costly to buy a new amp if you wanted to add new zones. In the squeezebox setup you do have control and display in each zone: by way of a squeezebox. And you can buy however good or bad an amp you want for each zone (you have a lot more amp choices when you're not limited to multi-channel amps). You have centralized control via laptop/pda/etc. over all zones. You can synchronize or not. You can use regular IR remotes to control your preamps, amps and sources and not have to worry about an infrastructure to get the signal around the house.
