I haven't tried the RPM.  What I do is download the perl source code
(tar.gz), unzip it to a subdirectory of my home directory and then
start it manually in its own terminal screen:

/home/username/slimserver/slimserver.pl

One benefit of this is any errors are logged to the screen, so if the
process dies, you can see what the trouble was.  I've run slimserver
for months at a time via this method and it works well.

This might be an effective way to run slimserver until the issues with
the RPM are straightened out.
