This is really not unusual, sadly. But most of it is not
the SqueezeBox/SlimServer's fault. Things were changed out
from under folks.
My daughter, who is an art major got it up on MDK 2006.
with a little help. She is not a tech geek.

It is really missing packages. And the wiki is a bit vague
on where each package comes from.
You can use MCC (Mandriva Control Center)'s nice gui
to install the six things listed on
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MandrivaLinux
Then there appears to be some critical packages missing from their
perl distro, but CPAN can install that for you.
I'll have to check with her to see which are lost.
Once the missing parts were installed (which used to ship
with Mandriva) it was automagic
I'd tell you myself, as I have my SlimServer on a Mandriva
box, and use three others, but the box with Slimserver is
an old release, which had all the needed stuff.
