YES!

I got myself into trouble yesterday for daring to suggest this on a NAS
thread.

Why not take the cost and performance advantages of standard,
off-the-shelf PC hardware? I'm starting to think the term "NAS" is
kind of a misnomer. People get the impression it's a super-specialized
device, but if you were to make one out of PC components, it doesn't
make it any less of a "NAS".

The thing that strikes me about current NAS devices is:

1. High cost.

2. Anemic processor.

3. Lack of flexibility/expandability.

The cost has been explained away by saying how convenient a NAS is,
that it's a turnkey installation. I guess this is my chief beef with
the concept. Philosophically, I've never been one to pay extra for
convenience.

The OS is something that's a little behind current NAS devices but I
think if I was to do this I might go with ClarkConnect. Apparently the
bloat is creeping in but it not only comes with Perl installed, it comes
with SlimServer installed!

Now the latest strike against my PC-NAS idea is that it might be noisy.
I was going to counter with a fanless VIA Mini-ITX version which would
still undercut a NAS by about $300 but I didn't want to rock the boat
too much. :o)
