Passive speakers won't work. They are called passive because they do not have a built-in amplifier (vs. active ones). There is no amplification in the Squeezebox that could drive passive speakers (except headphones which need very little amplification). What you need is a pair of active speakers with an auto on/off function. They power on when there is an input signal present and power off after some idle time.
