I'll be the one to jump in and say 6.50 works great for me on both win2k and ubuntu AMD64 linux. My library is only about 7000 songs.
Just speculating, but maybe with 18000 songs in the library you need more ram. Did previous releases work in the same machine with the large library? Is the library in one directory or is it spread across multiple machines/drives?
