What would help them sell more SqueezeBoxes would be to add support for UPnP in the firmware.

It's too bad the SqueezeBoxes don't support UPnP, whereas most of the other hardware players do, because it beats them on all the features, apart from UPnP.

Mt-daap or Gmediaserver are great UPnP/AV servers, and are coded in C, so they can easily be embedded in memory limited devices. It's a lot more difficult to embed SlimServer, it has been done, but it's not possible to integrate it on a wireless router for example with 4Mb of flash. Gmediaserver takes less than 200kb, and libupnp 130kb...

Given that SlimDevices only make money when you buy their hardware (the
software is free), they have little economic incentive to make the
software UPnP compatible.

True that the slimserver is free but can only be used with SqeezeBox (I
think). And the more flexible the server is the more SqeezeBoxes they
will sell !

I'm sure that if you or someone else were to code up working UPnP server support in slimserver, the patch would be happily accepted. The point is that you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for Slim Devices to fund development of UPnP support, because doing so doesn't sell them more Squeezeboxes.
