thanks a bunch for the responses. most of my music is either flac or mp3. the ripping software is max because i'm on a mac.
I haven't dabbled with cue sheets yet but I'd like to give that a shot. I have used audacity in the past and so that seems like one possible option. and clive, thanks for laying out the other possibilities. one problem with re-ripping is that I have a lot of music that I don't possess original cd's of. my feeling is that having a marked in point (which would just be another tag field) is the simplest approach.
