I just got home and looked again at the cable modem. The other port isn't an ethernet port - it's a USB port. Sorry about that - I don't know what I was thinking. The cable modem is an NTL E08C007 so - judging by the comments above - I'll need a router.
I have no need to go wireless (at the moment) and having a wire to the Squeezebox will be fine, so would something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-8-Port-Ethernet-Unmanaged-Switch/dp/B000087H94/sr=1-2/qid=1168886663/ref=sr_1_2/202-3642568-8379805?ie=UTF8&s=electronics work fine? It looks like I wouldn't need to configure it.
