They wouldn't, but such a feature would be very much at odds with the
rest of the networked design.

Great idea, someone must've thought of that before!.

There are many of these things that share usb connected devices to a
LAN, the Linksys NSLU2 for instance.

You can install a custom version of Linux on the NSLU, watch for the USB
attach event and copy files automatically if you desire, making a remote
system mount it needs software in two places, so I'd stick to copying.
No new hardware needed.
