On the SB2/3, you can also try reprogramming Xilinx: unplug, press and
hold "1", plug it back in.

Reprogramming the Xilinx chip addresses most sound-related crashes.   
By contrast, a factory reset (press and hold ADD) addresses many set-up
issues.  I think a factory reset reprograms Xilinx as well.

On the SB2/3, the Xilinx controls most of the sound functions. 
Unfortunately the SliMP3 and the Squeezebox 1 are not like this, they
have a hardwired decoder that can't be reprogrammed on-the-fly like
that.
