I agree with jefmeh, I own a Cowon D2 4GB and two 8GB SDHC cards that
hold my Jazz and World Music libraries. The storage benefits that you
gain by using a small high quality lossy format with smaller files for
your portable DAP outweights any sound quality benefits you might gain
from big Flac files. If you get a portable DAP with a high capacity
drive the portability is somehow deminish because hard-drive based DAPs
comsume more power, generate noise and are more delicate. So, if you
want to use your portable DAP while performing physically challenging
activities, like running or biking, I would stay away from hard-drive
based DAPs. I have a library ripped to Flac ver 1.1.4 at level 8 for
use with my SB3 at home. I convert a subset of this Flac library to
MP3s using LAME version 3.97 -V2 -vbr -new. I rip most of my CDs to
Flac using dBpowerAmp R12 Reference (EAC for problematic CDs) and then
use the dBpowerAmp Batch Converter to build my MP3 subset library. I
also store a copy of my MP3 library in a 120GB WD Passport drive so
that I can bring it with me wherever I go.

I get great sound out of my Cowon D2 which has a maximum output rating
of 74mW @ 16 Ohms using Ultimate Ears Super.fi Pro IEMs. Almost
forgot... the D2 can also give you 52 hours of music playing from its
rechargeble battery.
