But would jo public buy them and and significant quantities? No way.

What's the point in it really? think about it, you might as well have a
cheap HDD in it (it's not like you will need a lossless format for such
as device). That saves a whole load of hassle. WiFi causes enough grief
for us geeks at times, let alone the other 99% of the general public.
HDD drives are less trouble for the manufacturer too, there would be
much less user support needed.

And what about the places it won't work, like the beach or when
camping? You might as well take a house brick.

If you get your music outside, why not just get a boombox with AUX in
and take the DB3 out too?

There is no market for this device, even if it sounds like an amazing
idea. Adding streaming to a HDD based portable player would be good for
internet radio etc and shift a few more units, but streaming only is a
very nice but completely flawed concept. It fails in both user
friendliness and flexibility.
