Well in my case: - I didn't have a spare computer lying around, I have bits, but not a whole PC. - if I had, I wouldn't know how to install and setup Linux - I wouldn't know how to set it up as a standalone server. - I don't have the space in my office, the NAS sits on a shelf in the corner, next to the router.
I can buy a NAS with SS pre-installed, copy music to it and plug it in the back off a wireless router, simple.
