The same question can be asked of the wireless or router - why does it
vary  ?

Re the PC - is there is something run at night in the background  (e.g.
virus check, games) on your PC that may lock out the CPU/bus and hence
affect the Ethernet driver.

I am not suggesting that the PC/cable/Ethernet driver is definitely the
problem - all I am saying is do not exclude the possibility that some of
the problem may lie on the server side.
