Yes, you can install an OS and slimserver. I think what most people do is temporarily install the HDD in another computer, load the OS and necessary software like sshd, samba, etc., and then physically transfer the HDD to the Kurobox enclosure. The OS is typically a stripped down version of debian linux, but there are others that some people use.
