Thanks for the tips on the "Tune in URL" box. Didn't know it could be used with a filename. After seeing it work, I traced the HTTP headers from the Web interface and saw how the requests work at that level. Then I hacked a small Python program to do it from the command line.
After a bit more searching, I found the HTTP interface documented under Help, Technical Information, The SlimServer Web Interface. Now I can play a file or add (queue) it to the playlist from the command line. Just what I was looking for.
