Wouldn't a small ITX based PC that boots from a flash disk and mounts a 
disk off a standard NAS be an interesting solution for this problem. A 
flash based device could be really small, simple and reliable if all it 
has to do is get an IP over DHCP, run slimserver and mount a disk over 
SMB/flash. No noise, low power consumption. Not especially cheap of 
course, but simple, turn-key and compatible with any NAS in the way the 
Sonos stuff is. As you can see from the other thread, people like the 
Sonos for this reason...
