Because there are a lot more variables in this setup than in a NAS setup. For example, what if you don't run SqueezeCenter at all, and use SqueezeNetwork as your server? How would you set up the SBR? There are more concerns than just that, but it wasn't some evil plot to take more money from people. Using the Controller gives us a controlled, known setup methodology. We get "requests" all the time for making installation and configuration simpler. Reducing the number of possible variables in the process is one of the best ways to accomplish that. > Okay, Logitech's first priority was to sell the "duet" combo. Our "first priority" was to create a product that addressed a need we've seen in the market: a cost-effective multi-room music system with a better navigation system. The reason a separate Squeezebox Controller SKU exists is based on the unique architecture of the product family. Because of the centralized control model, we can use the controller across all of the players that connect to SqueezeCenter, including the original SliMP3. We figured that some of our existing users might like to have the controller for thei current setup, without having to buy another player. The reason a separate Squeezebox Receiver SKU exists is to add additional rooms to a Duet-based multi-room music system. Again, because of the centralized control model we use, it is *possible* to use SqueezeCenter and some other type of controller (an iPhone, a Nokia 770/800 web tablet, etc.) to use the SBR, but that was never the product's focus. To make the SBR configurable by something other than the Squeezebox Controller is: 1) non-trivial for all types of installations [wired vs. wireless, SqueezeCenter vs SqueezeNetwork as server, etc.]; and 2) was never part of the product's spec. There is a member of the community developing a SqueezeCenter plug-in to configure the SBR without a Squeezebox Controller. If/when that's released, you should be able use the SBR without the SBC. > I don't want to start a flame war and certainly don't mean this as > troll... Or is Logitech using > the community to develop a commercial product? I'm all confused... MUCH of what you see in Duet and the new SqueezeCenter is a direct result of us using these forums to listen to, and interact with, our users to understand what we should build next and how it should work. These so-called "fanboys" or "apologists" are actually just people who like (or often love) the Squeezebox for what it does for them--let's them listen to the music they love, when, where, and how they would like--and want to share that with other people. They value their ability to speak directly to us, value each other, and are, therefore, usually not very agreeable when people post insulting or rude comments. I think it is important that you realize they make the products better for YOU by providing constant feedback (both positive and negative) to us, by supporting you when you ask questions here, and by testing/reporting bugs/etc. I sincerely hope they have a thick enough skin to deal with the thinly-disguised insult of being labelled as nothing more than "fanboys." And, as a point of fact, we *are* using the community to help us develop a commercial product. They aren't getting paid in anything but our sincerest thanks and some hardware to develop on. -=> Jim -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
