Thanks. I think BPA has got it. I am running the server on an ARM-based NAS (Linkstation). I'll try out the fix suggested in that thread and see if that fixes things.
To be honest it never would have occurred to me to suspect that the volume on the squeezebox would have any connection to the server, other than maybe reporting the current value.
