hi Bill-- lots of great comments in your post, thanks for taking the time to post that. On the delay when hitting search Artists/Albums (you didn't mention Tracks, which will be MUCH worse): I fixed that on our development tree and you'll see that delay disappear entirely when 7.0.1 is released. Also, I think the important take-home on that "5-6 room" limitation talking point is that it's largely bogus. The limitation is not SqueezeCenter or Squeezeboxes, it's newtork bandwidth and CPU power. Throw enough of both at the problem (fast server, wired network) and you can go well beyond that. Coming up with a rule-of-thumb limit is useful for the masses, who can't be bothered with details (no offense, masses, we love your orders).
