I'm not a network engineer either. I just describe what's caused me
trouble (I don't think I'm a geek, I prefer "early adopter.") If you're
stringing wire, I'd go with the cat6 unless the price is prohibitive. Is
there cat7?

I try to eliminate the easy causes of issues. Anything that takes
"forever" compared to an earlier experience is usually caused by the
things that have changed in the configuration.

To think of it, I'm usually the last to advocate a wire change: most
"hifi" wire is a waste of money from a physics standpoint.

I would pound a network card, particularly an older card that might
falter on super frames or a connection that might be suspect for the
same reasons.

Whoseewhatsee is right: cat6 isn't required but it does eliminate a
possibility.. (unless the catx is a cable bought from a retailer who
pushes "super" quality cables (for $50) that might have a quality issue
the same as the $5 cable...)
