Wow after reading your last link, they have been doing this because they
think you add Soundcheck gain and replay gain together? They are
separate volume leveling ideas. They are not used together.
Soundcheck is Itunes version of replay gain. Ipods do not use replay
gain because Soundcheck is Itunes proprietary volume gain method. It's
not as acurate as Replay gain according to most of the Audio threads on
the net. Itunes completely ignores replaygain tags. I don't know of
any other devices that use Soundcheck for volume leveling other than
Ipods. I tag my files with it so that I can have volume leveling on my
Ipods but I also tag them for replay gain so my other player can have
volume leveling. The 2 methods are close in the figures they give but
not exact. When you add them together we are getting volume leveling
but about twice of what it should be. You need to use one or the other
but not both, or like has been suggested, have a switch to pick which
track gain a person has and be able to turn one off. I read that it
may be only a couple of people affected but you might be surprised.
Many might not notice it and just keep cranking the volume up.
