Just come back off holiday to find that this issue still seems to exist (but there seems to have been some excellent progress on iPeng, so things are not all bad).
This does not seem to be the same bug as http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8360 that Michael quoted at the beginning of this thread, and this issue seems to be multi-platform. Should I open a bug report? I've looked and there doesn't seem to be anything open that coves this.
