On the topic of hardware vs. (Linux) software RAID: http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/008696.html http://linux.yyz.us/why-software-raid.html I have a colleague who got bitten real hard by one of those cheap (yes, $150 is cheap) hardware controllers. Lost everything, no backup. Hardware RAID on professional servers with 4 hour maintenance contracts from reputable vendors are a good idea but you're much better off with a reliable software RAID like Linux MD than with a hobby card with barely any support.
