i'm not a true audiophile so can you please explain this?

are you saying there should be a pre-amp between the SB and the amp? 
is that what you mean?  (what is analog level matching?  i thought all
consumer gear was at -10db, isn't that the case?  i know you can adjust
the analog outs on the SB, but i would have thought that -10 would =
100% SB output, and that any input would have padding anyway, right?)
