Hi everyone:
Curious, if swc is using anaconda, why not stick with Spyder? It is
pre-installed and pre-configured. The same applies for the Enthought
distribution and its corresponding editor.

I only say this because I learned python with IDLE, and I only left it
recently when I started working with pandas/teach for swc. Now I'm using
emacs/sublime/ipython notebook, since all I really need is tab complete. I
really only moved out of IDLE because I got comfortable with it that I was
able to explore other environments without any hindrance to the actual
programming. Now, this could just show how much I do (or don't) use
Python...

I want to think my previous instructors all used IDLE is because it is what
shipped with python and for teaching and doing basic stuff, tab complete is
really all you need. Then again, I wasn't a grad student trying to do data
analysis right away with a new tool.

I've only seen python taught out of the notebook during the swc workshops.
The few times a workshop made it to a python script, the instructors only
used a regular text editor or nano.

I personally have no preference for a GUI (just rstudio for R...).
Keep in mind, novices will probably be very attached to whatever you first
show them.
