Hi all,
This Friday is the next round of Instructor Hangouts! On the docket this
week:
Morning session - 9 AM PDT
- Discussion of the 'Approaching Excel' thread on this list from the
past week. It sounds like the community largely agrees that we're here
to teach techniques and ideas and not tools, but questions remain about
how to approach spreadsheets practically given their widespread use, and
without unintentionally denigrating their users despite the fact that
they are sometimes at odds with our founding principles.
- Roundtable on setting the level of a workshop - at the request of
our friends at PyLadies [1]. How do you make sure to set the right
challenge for your students, both before the workshop, and adaptively
during? SWC has put a lot of thought into this, and we'd love to share
stories and hear your experiences on how this has played out in practice.
Evening session - 9 PM PDT
- Our first video review! We'll be watching Damien Irving's recent
teaching [2], and giving some comments on his practice. This is a great
opportunity to get some experience critiquing teaching - I hope you'll
join us!
As usual, the floor is open to all for any spare time after the posted
schedule is finished. If you'd like to have your teaching video
reviewed, or make a suggestion for our next discussion two weeks from
now, just let me know.
Call-in details are at

there!
