Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your comments - it appears that there are three issues in
various stages of crystallization:
1. Should we decline to work with some organizations because we don't
like their methods or aims? The consensus seems to be to let individual
instructors decide so long as the code of conduct is respected. There
also seems to be support for a procedure for referring problematic cases
to the Steering Committee (or a subcommittee).
2. Should we charge some organizations a significantly higher admin fee
than others? Most people seem to feel that companies should pay more
than universities, but it gets tricky after that: where do the US
national labs or the NIH fall? Do companies in countries like Brazil
pay the same as companies in Silicon Valley? When do we waive fees
entirely? The Steering Committee has already started looking at this,
and will be asking for input; see below for discussion of what we'll do
until there's a policy.
3. Should we help arrange paid teaching engagements for instructors, in
the same way that we now post job ads for partner organizations? This
isn't pressing, so we'll defer it until #2 is sorted out.
That leaves two questions: what to tell Monsanto today, and what to tell
other companies while we're waiting for policy to be agreed. I started
talks with Monsanto on a "pay what everyone else pays" basis; I think
it's unfair to change our tune now, but I'll make it very clear that
this is a one-time deal, and that terms are likely to change in future.
(This also avoids pre-empting policy decisions about #2.) I will then
tell other companies that we're in the process of writing rules for
working with them, and keep them on hold until those rules are written.
Thanks again for all your comments - as Tracy said, it's been great to
see everyone get engaged. And on a related note, Katy Huff has posted a
list at
http://software-carpentry.org/blog/2015/03/scf-subcommittees.html of
subcommittees - I was really pleased that so many of you volunteered.
If you haven't yet, but would like to, please give us a shout.
Cheers,
Greg
