Hi all.
I'm new to the list but I was also there and wanted to give my 2c.
I quite liked the conference, thought I agree that there was a strong
corporate presence.
For the organization, I felt it went very well given that this was the
first in the series.
I can't attest for all speakers, but at each point there were multiple
talks I wanted to see,
and all that I saw were good.
Having organized sprints would have been great, I think it is planned
for the next iteration.
If I have time I'll try to organize a scikit-learn one.
Cheers,
Andreas Mueller
ps: I was invited to the conference and talked about scikit-learn.

Hi Terry,
Thank you very much for the report, that's really interesting.
My feeling is that "Data Science" has shown traction mostly in the
corporate world, so your experience does not surprise me so much.
(I'm using the word 'traction' on purpose, not sure whether it's
startup-y or used in the corporate world more broadly.)
Cheers,
Marianne

A quick report on the conference:
There were some nice talks about the open source projects Jupyter (related
to IPython) and Scikit-learn. Wes McKinney (creator of Pandas) gave an
inspiring talk about the need for a universal C/C++ dataframe. There's a
cool open source project H20 which does deep learning, but it's hard to tell
how "open source" it is, because it's mostly being developed by a single
company.
My main complaint is that despite the conference being called "Open Data
Science", there wasn't enough emphasis on open source. It felt like there
was a heavy corporate presence. The keynote talks were mostly corporate
people doing self promotion or talking about the data science career. There
weren't any open source software speakers featured in the keynotes. The
talks themselves were a mixed bag in quality.
There weren't any hack rooms for working on open source projects and the
conference could have been organized better. There were some rooms that
were half empty and other rooms that were overfilled.

Seems like Gael Varoquax and Wes McKinney are going, which says good
things about the content.
If you go, report back and let us know!

I live in Massachusetts, so I was planning to go for at least a day. I
wasn't planning on going to the pre-conference workshops because it's 3
hours one-way for me to get to Boston.
I would be curious to know if anyone else is going or if they know
anything
about this conference. I've seen quite a few advertisements for the
Open
Data Science Conference, but it's completely new and I don't know
anything
about it or who the organizers are.

If so, is anyone also going to the pre-conference workshops this
weekend?
