Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask the SWC community for your feedback on DataJoy (
www.getdatajoy.com), an online Python & R IDE that I've been working on,
and which I hope can be useful to teachers. To give you a bit of
background, the tech behind this comes from an online LaTeX editor (
www.sharelatex.com) which we ported across to DataJoy to let you
collaborate in real-time on Python & R code, and run your code in 'the
cloud'. We pretty much did this because it was fun and we could, and then
started looking for a real-world problem to solve with it :). The most
interest has come from teachers who have used it to quickly set up their
students with Python/R and to share work with them. This made me think it
might be of interest to SWC. (In hindsight I should have seen this use-case
earlier given my involvement with Software Carpentry and seeing first-hand
the difficulties involved in getting stuff installed on learners laptops.)

DataJoy isn't a sophisticated IDE, but we've made an effort to make it
simple and clear to use, so it's suited to the sort of introductory coding
involved in teaching/learning Python and R. I haven't had a chance to teach
a workshop using it yet unfortunately, but it's recently got to a position
where I'd be confident doing so (it's now stable and capable of doing most
things that are needed.)

I'm curious to hear any thoughts about it, and also:

1) Is DataJoy something that you can see being useful in teaching software
carpentry workshops, compared to say a local IPython notebook? (If you're
interested in doing so, please let me know and I'll do everything I can to
make sure it goes smoothly.)

2) How we can turn DataJoy into your ideal teaching tool? We've only
recently started to think of DataJoy as a teaching aid rather than a
general purpose IDE, so we're very open to ideas for the future here!

Sorry for the long email, and thanks for any thoughts!

James
