We're in the middle of a workshop at Wollongong, and had a problem using nano on Windows machines (but was fine on OSX and linux). We encountered the 'redirection not supported' message that has been discussed previously on this list: http://lists.software-carpentry.org/pipermail/discuss_lists.software-carpentry.org/2015-August/thread.html#3263 & http://lists.software-carpentry.org/pipermail/discuss_lists.software-carpentry.org/2015-September/subject.html#3341

The solution we settled on was to invite learners to use whatever text editor they already felt comfortable with, which for the Windows users was Notepad or Notepad++

In a quiet moment after the workshop, I read through the previous discussions on this list and did a test with one of the learners. We determined that our windows learners simply hadn't properly followed the git installation instructions on the workshop webpage. Perhaps they were careless, perhaps they were a bit overwhelmed by the unfamiliar options.

We wondered about the possibility of bundling git into the SWC installer and setting these options so that the user doesn't have to be so attentive to changing the installation options (cf. a similar suggestion by Trevor King here: https://github.com/swcarpentry/windows-installer/issues/31#issuecomment-133740208).

In any case, if you've got a workshop coming up, I'd recommend that in your pre-workshop emails you ask Windows users to be especially attentive to the git installation instructions, rather than clicking through and accepting the defaults.

Ben
