In a quiet moment after the workshop, I read through the previous
discussions on this list and did a test with one of the learners. We
determined that our windows learners simply hadn't properly followed
the git installation instructions on the workshop webpage. Perhaps
they were careless, perhaps they were a bit overwhelmed by the
unfamiliar options.
This has been reported elsewhere as well [1], so I think it's definitely
an issue that we should try to work on improving.
One thing that would be useful is to document this somewhere the
instructors are likely to see it, since the fix is really easy if the
instructors are aware of it when they see the problem.
We wondered about the possibility of bundling git into the SWC
installer and setting these options so that the user doesn't have to
be so attentive to changing the installation options (cf. a similar
suggestion by Trevor King here:
https://github.com/swcarpentry/windows-installer/issues/31#issuecomment-133740208).
This would be great. If someone has the time to try to figure out how to
implement it we'd welcome a PR.
It's also possible this setting is stashed in a config file somewhere
and if we could track that down we could change it post installation
using the SWC installer.
