I'm happy with "reality check".  I think it is a good substitute.

As a reality check on the correctness though, has anyone checked to see if
those assumed to be put off by the term "sanity check" confirm that they
are indeed actually put off by "sanity check"?

I ask as my general understanding of these things is to avoid words/terms
that are frequently used as slurs.  Especially the sorts of things kids
would have thrown at someone when they were young forming a lasting
impression.

I can certainly see this with terms like "moron" or "cripple".  But
"sanity"?  Maybe by association to "insane"?  Is "insane" used as a slur
though?  My only experience with it has been to imply going way beyond.  As
in, "you are insane" or "that is insane".  Usually actually a complement.
