The Belmont Forum is a group of the world's major and emerging funders
of global environmental change research committed to enabling and
supporting international, cross-disciplinary research in response to
the ‘Belmont Challenge’ (a range of high-priority international
environmental and societal challenges). Critical conditions for
fulfilling this remit are to provide (1) a functional research
e-infrastructure (2) coherent principles and data policies and (3)
ensure that researchers are sufficiently equipped with the necessary
digital research and data management skills to leverage these
facilities.

Vicky Lucas (of the Institute of Environmental Analytics, University
of Reading) and I are part of the team working on item 3. Having
conducted a skills gap analysis and compiled a preliminary report, we
are planning to hold a curriculum-planning workshop on Friday 28th
April (adjacent to the European Geosciences Union meeting in Vienna)
to which you are cordially invited.

In the course of the workshop we aim to bring together a range of
global environmental change and earth science research specialists in
order to test the results of the gap analysis and establish the
foundations for digital skills training requirements (‘digital skills’
includes, but is not limited to, research data management skills, data
deposition and sharing, software/programming/modeling capabil) across
the breadth of Belmont Forum-relevant disciplines. The content and
conclusions of the workshop will therefore form a critical part of the
recommendations that will ultimately be made to the Steering Committee
and Partner Organisations for taking further action.

As spaces are limited, we would be grateful if you could confirm
whether you are able to attend (by email to me at
[email protected]) at your earliest convenience. Do note, if
you are personally unable to attend, we would be delighted if you
could recommend a colleague or advanced student from your discipline
who would be able to participate in your stead.

A more detailed agenda will be circulated prior to the event.

When: Workshop 9.00-17.00 followed by dinner on Friday 28 April (all
meals and refreshments will be provided by the hosts)
Where:

We look forward to seeing you in Vienna!

With kind regards, Fiona Murphy, on behalf of the Belmont Forum Action
