I found the thesis of this article [1] to be gratifying in light of the
work that we do.

I especially like the discussion of "interpretive labor", which is
under-rewarded in many parts of academia.  Working hard to perfect the
explanation of an idea is particularly worthwhile because

the cost of explaining stays constant as the group grows, but the cost of
> understanding increases with each new member
