I think that this is an important point: Whatever editor is used in lessons 
should be an editor that can be configured for git commit messages, otherwise 
we are asking learners to learn *two* new editors!

I would also echo the fact that nano is available practically everywhere, and 
thus being familiar with it equips somebody with the minimum tools that they 
will need when logged into a system that they do not usually use, e.g. a 
computing cluster. It's one of the arguments for why we avoid GUI git clients 
too.
