Another paper of interest is Rich et al's "K-8 Learning Trajectories
Derived from Research Literature: Sequence, Repetition, Conditionals",
which synthesizes 100 research articles to sketch learning trajectories
for sequencing, repetition, and conditionals in introductory programming
classes - their focus is kids, but the same ideas have to be taught to
adults. This one *is* open access (PDF is linked from
https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=3106166), and their notation
separates hands-off from hands-on activities and obligatory from
optional pathways.
Cheers,
Greg
