For awhile now I've always liked the way that the Debian Maintainer Guide's
"Social Dynamics of Debian"[1] section sets its departure point for the
spirit of volunteerism and community in the Debian community.

I recently had a go at this listing trying to give it a Carpentry bent.
What I came up with was:

   1.

   We all are volunteers.
   -

      Lead by example.
      -

Building enthusiasm is how we create impact.
      2.

Friendly cooperation is the driving force.
   -

Contributions should solve problems, not create them.
      -

Contributions are most valuable when others appreciate them.
      3.

Experiment first, then ask for help.
   -

Try things on your own first.
      -

Respect people’s time, it is a valuable resource.
      4.

   Software Carpentry is constantly improving.
   -

Anyone, including beginners, can make quality contributions.
      -

Be the change you want to see in the community (and the world).

I'd like to hear community reaction to this, what do you like, not like
about this list? Is it something that would be helpful for us to use to
welcome new people in and remind old timers about what we're here for? Is
there something missing that I should have included?
