In addition to adding programs while in the account settings portion
of system prefs, you can open a program, lets say mail, go to the doc
while mail is running and arrow down and there is an option that says
to start at login or something to that effect. Its another quick way
to add something. I'm also assuming this doesn't add a program to the
doc at the same time so should work.

Yes, indeed, you can have things called automatically when you
login. Under normal unix type environments, you could just add it
to .profile and it would run when you logged in. I've not tried
this with osx, so don't know if it will work or not. However,
Apple does provide a way to do this.
It's called login items. Using system preferences, click on
accounts, then select login items. There's a table there listing
your current login items. There's buttons to add or delete items
as well. Just add whatever program you like to the list, and it
will run when you login to your machine. I have a program here
that will allow you to edit these from a regular program, but it's
not 100% working with vo yet, and until I can figure out how the
heck to change graphical items on the screen, I don't want to hand
it out just yet, since it's still too much related to apple sample
code for me to call it mine.
