Tim, crazy question, but can a Mac act as a wins server? I only ask
because I have one windows box my kid is currently learning how to
use before I get him a Mac; ay he's eight and the windows box is
spare parts. I'm not sure there needs to be a wins server, but
basically I'd like him to be able to print to the Mac and so far
that isn't happening yet and wasn't sure this had anything to do
with anything.
tnx

Hi Richard,
Mac Help is your friend. These instructions are copied directly
from the Mac Help. I simply press cmd+shift+question mark then
navigate to the Search field and type "work group". You can then
interact with the Outline, see what matches, which was the first
item, double-click it (cmd+shift+space+space), navigate to the
HTML content, interact with it then begin reading. I put them in
this message for you though so read on.
Changing the workgroup for your Mac
If your Mac and Windows computers are in the same workgroup and on
the same local network or subnetwork, it’s easier to connect to
the Mac from the Windows computer. When the Mac belongs to the
same workgroup as the Windows computer, its name appears in the
Workgroup Computers panel of My Network Places.
“WORKGROUP” is the default Windows workgroup name for Mac OS X.
Using Directory Access, you can change the workgroup name on the
Mac to match a workgroup name you are already using.
Open Directory Access (in Applications/Utilities).
If necessary, click the lock icon and type the name and password
for an administrator user on your computer.
Double-click SMB/CIFS in the list and type the new workgroup name
in the dialog, then click OK.

FYI, Directory Access is in your Utilities folder in the
Applications folder on your hard drive.
